Virtually every human being who has ever walked the planet has endured some circumstance that they don’t want, didn’t chose, or are unwilling to accept.

Some claim that forgiveness is the solution when that happens. But what’s the deal with forgiveness, really? Does it actually help? Is forgiveness all it’s cracked up to be?

Many say that it is not. They insist that since no amount of forgiveness can change the past, it’s useless. Since forgiveness doesn’t un-do what happened or erase the difficulties, pain, or suffering we faced, you shouldn’t bother with it, they say. Others assert that the reason you shouldn’t forgive is because the “bad guys” don’t deserve to be forgiven.

All valid points.

And yet… there are a lot of people out there who swear by forgiveness.

Speaking from personal experience, after I was kidnapped the last thing on my mind was forgiving the criminals who’d done that to me. I was struggling just to breathe; I felt like I was a prisoner in my own mind and I could not fathom forgiving those men. Why would I do that? They deserved to suffer just as they’d made me suffer. As time went on and I began to heal, though, I realized that the anger, hatred and resentment I was harboring toward them was actually harming me… it was a burden that I was losing the strength the carry. I read the Buddha quote, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned,” and realized that I had to forgive them. Not because they deserved to be set free, but because I did.

Today’s video talks about the role that forgiveness plays in the path of helping you move from being a victim to a victor.

Consider that if you’re feeling stuck today, chances are there’s something or someone from your past that you haven’t forgiven. Chances are that someone you haven’t forgiven is yourself.

Forgiveness is the first step to setting yourself free. The next step is taking back your life and designing it in the way you want.

Do you believe that you’re too strong to let the past hold you back, and you’re ready to move boldly forward in the direction of your future? If so, then it’s time we speak.
